Sickle Cell Vaso-Occlusive Crisis, Pediatric: Management and Care
Description This course discusses vaso-occlusive crisis (VOC) in pediatric patients with sickle cell disease. It also discusses pathophysiology, precipitating factors, signs and symptoms, and treatments. The course emphasizes pain assessment in children and includes information on nursing considerations and patient and caregiver teaching. Note: This course is delivered without audio narration. Continuing Education Credit This course qualifies for 0.5 contact hours, which can be earned on this course until December 1, 2017. Objectives After completing this course, the learner will be able to: identify precipitating factors associated with VOC. outline the assessment of pain in a child with VOC. describe the typical manifestations of VOC according to the patient's age. explain the management of pain during VOC. describe the nursing care, including psychosocial considerations and patient and family teaching, for a child with VOC.
